Join us for Berlin Science Week

YERA will be hosting the free event Science and the future of environmental law: a foray into the metaphysics of harm at Berlin Science Week on Saturday 7th November, led by Augustine Hacques, a documentary filmmaker and human rights lawyer, and Simon Handy, a systems thinker and process philosopher. This will examine hidden assumptions within Western science and philosophy that underpin our conceptions, understandings, and applications of environmental law, especially with regards to notions entity, agency, responsibility, value systems, and harm. These underlying assumptions are not the only ones compatible with contemporary thought, and through a film and the following discussion, we aim to challenge these underlying assumptions to open up to possibilities to alternate and diverse metaphysics.

Rights of Nature

On 8th and 9th November, YERA Hub hosted a two-day summit, both as a culmination of our various research projects on the Rights of Nature and a way to facilitate interdisciplinary dialogue on various topics surrounding the theory, implementation, and activism for Rights of Nature. We discussed the difference between harm in anthropocentric law and harm within natural processes, and its implications on the implementation of Rights of Nature. We also hosted workshops on the relationship between Western rationality and nature and legal rights to protest as advocacy for the Rights of Nature.

Our Mission

To expand and revise the European legal system to legally recognise and effectively enforce the harmonious continuation of life-sustaining planetary processes. Under the planetary boundary model, we wish to leverage the European (Union Law and ECHR) and the domestic laws to achieve this. Theo Rekelhof made the video below to illustrate the overshoot of planetary boundaries and the value of law in keeping humans within planetary boundaries.
